The difference between a trend and a fad is simply longevity.
Fads are short-lived and are commonly accompanied by a media frenzy of sorts. Fads statistically last under three years.
Trends take longer to build and are often developments and improvements on past trends or looks. They relate to lifestyle shifts and they way we function.
Here are some elements that were hot at one time and what has taken their place:
THE UNINSULATED GARAGE IS A THING OF THE PAST
- A well designed finished garage is a must-have to give the homeowner a clean yet very versatile and useable space.
A UNFINISHED, DUSY BASEMENT IS OUT
- The basement has become that additional square footage that counts in the home’s footprint and is finished to suit the owner’s lifestyle.
PULL OUT THE PANELLING
- Applied mouldings to drywall with or without chair rail are in.
BRICK IS BLACK
- Brick and stone are back as the overall cladding with stucco appearing as an accent. Aluminum siding has stepped aside for vinyl, which comes in an array of styles.
ARE WE GETTING TALLER?
- Eight-foot ceiling haven’t provided enough headroom for some time. Now nine feet is the standard and some homes are going to 10 feet.
- Today’s trend is having a compact and well-organized laundry room on the second floor. Extra care is required to strengthen floor stability since modern washer operates a very high RPM and vibrate something terrible.
- Getting that warm, cozy feeling from the ground up is in demand, so the radiant floor is a rising star.
COPPER OUT, PLASTIC IN
- The cost effectiveness and ease of working with plastic has made this a no brainer.
A PLACE FOR MOM
- Family dynamics have changed so much over the years, the need for in-law suites or areas that can be adapted are particularly in demand
